Reflection Journal (15th August)

Today’s independent work started with a one to one discussion with my tutor, where I express my concerns about how to move the project forward and I am currently stuck in the format which I will present my pattern design on the portraits. I was struggling about either to make my portraits 3D or keep on with the photograph experiments. However, a brand new idea popped up after I reviewed my sketchbook pages with my tutor and we analysed the gallery visit page of the Tate Modern, I took a lot of photos on that day using my pattern stencil made of cardboard boards, and throughout the circles I cut out, I captured lots of colour blocks which symbolises feelings and emotions I was having. Tutor has suggested me that I can experiment with these patterns to create stop- motion animation and see how the colours has changed. I was so inspired by this idea as I believe the moving image with colour changes is a representation of how the emotions change throughout the time, or like a transition of the emotions. Which is highly linked with my theme ‘Abstract Emotions’

In the afternoon, I have been focusing on combining the gallery experiments I had with the portraits , and building on that, I successfully created a stop- motion animation which shows how the colours has transferred from on to another. By looking at this animation, I believe I have presented the mixed and complicated emotions when my friend took the photo such as the struggle and anxiety she was having. This is actually my goal since sometimes feelings or emotions like that are easily be hidden by people and very hard to present just by the facial expressions.
